Cyprus offers a lot of locally produced items, which are popular to visitors. These include leather goods, woven goods, ceramics, copperware, silverware , baskets and the famous traditional handmade Lefkaritika lace. Other items that are good value for the Cyprus visitor are Cyprus wines and spirits. Worth trying and buying in Cyprus is the local desert wine called Comandaria, which has been produced on Cyprus island for centuries, Zivania which is the local strong stuff similar to Ouzo or Raki and the local brandies and various wines.
Shoes, shirts, imported textiles and spectacles are also good value for money.
Cyprus shops opening hours
In Cyprus, shops open at around 8.00 - 9.00 am and close at 7.00 pm during the Winter period and at around 8.30 pm during the Summer period.
From about the middle of June till end of August, Cyprus shops close from 1.00 - 2.00 pm till 5.00 pm for Siesta.
. On Wednesday and Saturday shops close for half day at around 2.00 pm.
On Sundays, shops in Cyprus are closed.
It is worth noting that in most of the tourist areas of Cyprus, both shops and supermarkets stay open till late at night and are also open on Sundays
Cyprus arts and crafts
The artistic heritage of Cyprus is a reflection of the islands history and traditions that have endured for centuries. This Cyprus heritage comes through proudly in lacework and embroidery, pottery and woodwork, and jewellery.
Cypriot lacework is prized for its quality and artistry. The village of Lefkara is particularly wellknown for its embroidery, called Lefkaritika. Embroidered lace, worked on linen or cotton, makes for highly decorative tablecloths, curtains, placemats and dresser mats.
Cypriot pottery. Pottery has been made in Cyprus continuously for thousands of years. Attractive pots come in all shapes and sizes. Terra cotta pieces with white decorations, copies of museum pieces, are popular gifts, as are copper wares, and handmade baskets.
For your Cyprus arts and crafts, there is a large Cyprus Handicraft Centre in Nicosia and official crafts shops as well as folk art museums in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos. Many of these items can also be found in Laiki Yitonia in Nicosia and in sovereign shops.
